Itinerary of your trip The Magical Northern Lights In Lapland

  • Day 1 Day 1: Kukkola
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Kukkola

Arrival at Kemi-Tornio, we welcome you at the airport. Transfer (45 min) in private vehicle to your rustic cottage, located in Kukkola, on the shore of the river Tornio, the largest river in the Nordic Countries. During the tour you will stay in the Kukkolankoski River Cottages, run by the ever-active Risto Kantola. The complex includes two restaurants, located in old wooden cottages, three saunas and 13 apartments, located in a rural environment. Food service is based on local ingredients, prepared by awarded chefs. Your apartment has three bedrooms (one with private WC/shower), a kitchenette, living room and wardrobe. Upon arrival weโ€™ll serve you a typical dinner, and explain you the programme for the next three days. Later on, you can join our English-speaking professional photographer for a northern light chase session, depending on weather. Thanks to the absence of artificial lights, northern lights can be observed right from the surrounding of your cottage!

  • Day 2 Day 2: Kemi
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Kemi

After a hearty breakfast, we depart to the old Kemi harbour at dusk. Hopefully the sea will already be frozen, so we can walk on it! Then we will be ready for a husky sled safari. The husky experience is very intense and charming: you are alone with the dogs and the wild nature of Lapland. You will hear howling as you get close โ€“ huskies are very friendly but they are also anxious to start the safari! After a security briefing weโ€™ll carry out a fantastic journey across the wild Lapland forest. We will drive between 8 and 15 km, depending on snow and weather conditions. At the end, weโ€™ll gather around the kota (Lappish nomadic tent), where you can sip coffee or hot juice and talk to Ulla about life in the Arctic. Note: no lunch opportunity exists close by. A typical dinner is then served at a restaurant in the farm, after which we can start our next northern lights chase.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Kukkola
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Kukkola

After breakfast, weโ€™ll take a short (5 minute) sledge transfer across the frozen river to the Swedish shore, where the old fishermen village of Kukkolaforsen is located. In case of weak ice, weโ€™ll have to drive about 45-60 minutes, as the closest bridge is almost 20 km away. The village is perfectly preserved, and the resort has a great restaurant, run with love since three generations by the local Spolander family. The village is located on the Kukkola river rapids, the longest in Northern Europe (3500 m, 16 m jump). Weโ€™ll guide you through the interesting fish museum, where youโ€™ll learn how life used to be before technology came. The old mill can also be seen, as well as the millmanโ€™s house. Later, youโ€™ll learn how to make bread in the old traditional way, around the fire. You can taste the result of your bread-making activity together with a fish salad weโ€™ll serve you, alongside traditional coffee. Afterwards, letโ€™s rev up for snowmobile! Weโ€™ll do a 2-3 hour tour in the countryside around the village, guided by a local professional. Every snowmobile is driven by one of you, with another sitting behind. Weโ€™ll stop for a snack and driver change midway. The route and lentgh may vary according to weather conditions. The sun starts rising above the horizon in this period, making for great photo opportunities. A typical fish dinner will be served in the village restaurant. Where chef Margit Spolander and her children Johannah and Mathias will take care of you. Margit is also the author of multi-award recipe books, which can be purchased in the small souvenir shop. We return after dinner for an aurora observation attempt.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Kukkola
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Kukkola

Breakfast. Weโ€™ll spend the morning on the frozen river โ€“ be careful and do not step out of the area weโ€™ll mark as safe! It only takes a short walk to get into another world, where youโ€™ll be surrounded by nature in its wildest form. Youโ€™ll learn how to dig a hole for fishing, and hopefully you can chase some of our fantastic fish! A bigger hole can be dug for icewater dipping โ€“ a unique arctic experience! A snack and coffee will be served.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Kemi
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 5: Kemi

transfer to the airport for your flight to Helsinki. End of the tour
