Day 2: Reykjavik - Golden Circle

Itโ€™s off to Thingvellir National Park - geology at your fingertips. Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a historically and geologically significant site. It is also the site of the great divide between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The national park is also known for its breathtaking scenery and historical significance as the meeting place of the Icelandic parliament in 930 AD. Continue to the golden waterfall Gullfoss, which plunges in 2 steps into a narrow gorge, and to the geothermal area around the geyser. Childrenโ€™s amazement is guaranteed when the water fountain bursts out of the earth every 7-10 minutes. The phenomenon is explained in the adjacent Geysircenter. One night in the Golden Circle region. Approx. 220 km/approx. 3 hours (breakfast).

  • Day 3 Day 3: Hveragerdi - Eyjafjallajokull
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Hveragerdi - Eyjafjallajokull

On the way from Urridafoss to Seljalandsfoss lies the small village of Hvolsvollur. One of the first buildings is the Lava Center, which opened in mid-2017. Here you can learn all about the formation of Iceland, its volcanic origins and current volcanic eruptions and earthquakes in a modern exhibition. The interactive exhibition is an experience for young and old. The tour continues along the Sudkuste. You drive to the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. A photo stop here is highly recommended. In Reynisfjara, it is worth taking a walk along the black beach in search of lava stones that are polished here by the sea. One night in the surroundings of Eyjafjallajokull. Approx. 200 km/approx. 3 hours (breakfast).

  • Day 4 Day 4: Eyjafjallajokull - Vatnajokull
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Eyjafjallajokull - Vatnajokull

The drive takes you to Skaftafell National Park, where you can go on an easy hike (approx. 2 hours) to the glacier tongues. A ride on a tractor-drawn hay cart to the Ingolfshofdi peninsula in the mudflats (approx. 2.5 hours, optional) with several bird colonies is particularly exciting for children. A highlight for young and old awaits you at the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where you can take a 30-minute boat trip between the icebergs (not in October: we recommend a walk along the lagoon or on Diamond Beach). Keep your eyes peeled, you might spot a few playful seals. One night in the Vatnajokull region. Approx. 200 km/approx. 2.5 hours (breakfast).

Fascinating for young and old alike is Petraโ€™s Stone Museum (optional) on the way to Egilsstadir. Around 150 types of minerals have been found in Iceland; the collection on display here gives you an excellent overview of the beauty and diversity of stones and minerals. Great fun for children too! After a drive, you will conquer Icelandโ€™s largest forest area Hallormsskogur - very worthwhile in an otherwise almost forestless Iceland. You can end the evening with a relaxing dip in the warm water of the new Vok Bath near Egilsstadir (optional). One night in the East Fjords region. Approx. 200 km/approx. 2.5 hours (breakfast).

Make a stop at the child-friendly Modrudalur farm, where you can pet sheep and goats. Further north, just off the ring road, are the colorful, bubbling and hissing solfatar fields of Namaskard. At Lake Myvatn, family fun is close at hand: go looking for stone rolls in the Dimmuborgir lava maze. This exciting geological phenomenon consists of bizarre rock formations, caves and lava towers. It is no wonder that this fantastic nature has inspired stories about elves and trolls. You can also balance on pseudocraters in this area or take a short hike up a beautifully shaped volcanic cone. You will find that this region is a real highlight. 2 nights in the Myvatn/Husavik area. Approx. 220 km/approx. 3 hours (breakfast).

  • Day 7 Day 7: Husavik
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Husavik

Whale watching from a fishing boat? No problem in Husavik (optional). The small coastal town in the north of Iceland is considered one of the whale-watching capitals of Europe. Give it a try! Against a picturesque backdrop, up to 15 different whale species, e.g. dolphins and humpback whales, frolic in the sheltered bay in summer. An unforgettable experience for the whole family. During the tours, you also have the opportunity to gain fascinating insights into the way of life and protection of whales. Alternatively, we recommend the interesting whale museum at the harbor (optional) with original skeletons and many exciting details about the marine mammals. There is also the option of stopping off at one of the charming cafรฉs and restaurants serving local specialties. The route continues along the Tjornes peninsula to the Asbyrgi gorge and the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss. This natural wonder is located in the Vatnajokull National Park and never ceases to amaze due to its enormous size and scenic beauty. Ideal for a selfie with the whole family!
