Itinerary of your trip Disko Bay - Paradise Of Icebergs

  • Day 1 Day 1: Embarkation In Kangerlussuaq
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Embarkation In Kangerlussuaq

Flight from Keflavik or Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq on the west coast of Greenland (we recommend traveling to Keflavik or Copenhagen one, better two days before the onward flight to Greenland). Optional excursion to the Greenlandic ice sheet before embarkation. After your arrival in Kangerlussuaq, you will be transferred to the small harbor for embarkation. Zodiacs will take you the short distance over to the ship, where you will check into your cabin. Before you set sail, you will have time to explore the ship, unpack and make yourself comfortable in anticipation of the extraordinary adventure ahead. After the obligatory safety drill, enjoy the evening on board as the ship traverses the 160-kilometer-long Kangerlussuaq Fjord. Overnight stay on board.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Visit To Sisimiut
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Visit To Sisimiut

You reach the colorful town of Sisimiut, where you are presented with a picture of modern Greenland. With around 5400 inhabitants, Sisimiut is the second largest town in Greenland. Count Johan Ludvig Holstein founded a colony here in 1756 and named it "Holsteinsborg". In the oldest part of the old town, you can still find town houses from this era. Today, Sisimiut is an important economic and administrative center due to its fish processing industry. Highlights of your city tour include the historic colonial quarter, the museum and the beautiful church. In the afternoon, your journey continues north. In the evening, you will pass the Sisimiut-Isortuat Fjord and the settlements of Attu, Ikerasaarsuk and Kangaatsiaq. In the course of the light night, you pass Aasiaat and enter the southern waters of Disko Bay. The ship sets course for Disko Island, which is known for its striking 1000 meter high layered cliffs. Overnight stay on board.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Visit To A Community Center On Disco Island
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Visit To A Community Center On Disco Island

Your next stop is at the southern tip of Disko Island, where the ship will anchor in a protected natural harbor. The town of Qeqertarsuaq has a long, rich history. Considerable whale hunting brought prosperity to the community and made Qeqertarsuaq the most important town north of Nuuk in the 18th and 19th centuries. During your stay, you will stroll through the town, visit the characteristic octagonal church and the local community center, where a traditional Greenlandic "kaffemik" is held. Towards the end of the day, your ship sets a north-easterly course for a magnificent natural highlight - the huge Eqip Sermia glacier. This is located around 50 nautical miles north of Ilulissat and is known for its breathtaking beauty. Legendary Arctic explorers chose this place as the starting point for their studies. You sail as close as possible to the edge of the ice, but at a safe distance from calving glaciers and sometimes violent waves. Overnight stay on board.

  • Day 4 Day 4: At The Heart Mountain Of Uummannaq
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: At The Heart Mountain Of Uummannaq

When you wake up this morning, you will find yourself almost 600 km north of the Arctic Circle and in one of the most beautiful and sunniest regions of Greenland. The ship has reached Uummannaq, which is located on a small island. The impressive, 1,175 m high, heart-shaped mountain, which gave the town its name, dominates the view (Uummannaq means "place where the heart is"). You will have time to explore the town before returning to the ship for lunch. From the town, there is an extraordinary view of the 1,000-metre-high rock faces of the island, the snow-capped peaks of the Nuussuaq peninsula to the south and the fjord. Icebergs of all shapes and sizes drift majestically past in the fjord on a course determined by wind and currents. No less than 5 active glaciers at the bottom of the fjord ensure that we can observe many icebergs. The dry and balanced Arctic climate with around 2,000 hours of sunshine and 100 millimetres of precipitation per year gives Uummannaq the right to call itself the Greenland Riviera! Overnight stay on board.

  • Day 5 Day 5: At The Eqip Sermia Glacier
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: At The Eqip Sermia Glacier

In the morning, the ship reaches a magnificent natural spectacle, the calving Eqip Sermia glacier. We enjoy lunch on the sun deck with this magnificent natural wonder in the background. The Eqip Sermia Glacier, located about 50 nautical miles north of Ilulissat, is known for its breathtaking beauty. Legendary Arctic explorers chose this place as a base for their studies. One of these explorers, the famous Swiss glaciologist Alfred de Quervain, used this place as the starting point for his expeditions to the Greenland ice sheet over a century ago. We sail as close as possible to the edge of the ice - but at a safe distance to avoid falling blocks of ice and violent waves, which are often caused by the calving glacier. In the afternoon, we set course for Ilulissat, where we moor in the evening and take an evening walk to the Sermermiut plain. If the sea ice between the Ataa Fjord and the Eqi Glacier is too thick, the captain will have to choose a different route today. In this case, the itinerary will be adjusted accordingly and we could, for example, visit the abandoned coal mine in Qullissat or the settlement of Saqqaq. Overnight stay on board.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Ilulissat - Capital Of The Icebergs
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Ilulissat - Capital Of The Icebergs

Ilulissat is probably the best located town in Greenland. The name Ilulissat simply means "icebergs". The gigantic icebergs in the sea of Disko Bay originate from an ice fjord just half an hourโ€™s walk south of Ilulissat. The impressive frozen structures are born from the huge Sermeq-Kujalleq glacier some 70 km down the fjord. All its special features, together with the fjordโ€™s unforgettable landscape, have secured the ice fjord a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the more than 250 years that have passed since Ilulissat was founded, the town has grown steadily. Today, Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland with more than 4500 inhabitants. The legendary polar explorer Knud Rasmussen and his good friend Jรธrgen Brรธnlund were both born in Ilulissat. On this day, you have the opportunity to take part in a boat trip to the ice fjord (optional, from โ‚ฌ120 per person if booked before departure). It is also possible to organize a sightseeing flight over the ice fjord (optional, from โ‚ฌ 410 per person if booked before departure). In the evening, you will sail southwards from the "capital of icebergs". Overnight stay on board.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Visit To Sarfannguit
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Visit To Sarfannguit

Sarfannguit is a small settlement nestled in the foothills of the mountains and glaciers. The slightly more than 100 inhabitants of the hinterland are hunters and fishermen who mostly catch char and pursue reindeer and musk oxen. Even though technological progress and modern conveniences do not stop at the Inuit, they still maintain their traditional customs and preserve their Inuit heritage. But of course, the inhabitants still attach great importance to important customs and preserving the traditions of their Inuit heritage. You continue your journey towards the Kangerlussuaq Fjord, also known as the Sondre Stream Fjord. Especially the first part of the impressive passage of the fjord offers a great opportunity to enjoy the many panoramic views of the high mountains. Overnight stay on board.

  • Day 8 Day 8: Disembarkation In Kangerlussuaq
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 8: Disembarkation In Kangerlussuaq

During the night, the ship has completed the passage through the 160-kilometer-long Kangerlussuaq Fjord. Disembarkation begins after breakfast and transfer to the airport and flight to Kevflavik or Copenhagen. Individual journey home (we recommend planning at least one, preferably two connecting nights in Keflavik or Copenhagen).
