      Day 6: Wanaka

Today is your chance to explore one of the most beautiful towns in the southern lakes region with plenty of activities to tempt every lover of the outdoors. Included today โ€“ a visit to Mou Waho Island. Accessible only by boat from Wanaka and famous for being home to an (unnamed) island, in a lake (Arethusa Pool), on an island (Mou Waho), in a lake (Lake Wanaka), on an island (the South Island) in the ocean (the Pacific). Sounds complicated, but once you are there it will all make sense! Mou Waho Island is also a predator-free reserve with a natural glacial-formed lake at its summit. On Mou Waho you can see the rare flightless Buff Weka (extinct on New Zealandโ€™s mainland since 1920) and the Mountain Stone Weta. In Wanaka there are many walks, hikes and biking trails to choose from โ€“ check out the famous โ€œWanaka Treeโ€ while making your way around the lake! Or, if you feel like relaxing, ask your guide to recommend their favourite secret spots to enjoy the surrounding scenery. From the cascading waterfalls of Haast Pass to classic Kiwi coastal views, you wonโ€™t want to nap on the bus in case you miss anything. Your guide will have some epic surprise photo stops and short walks along the way. We roll into Franz Josef around late afternoon/early evening. With Aoraki/Mount Cook (New Zealandโ€™s highest mountain) twinkling behind the glaciers, Franz Josef is about as beautiful a setting as you can find in New Zealand. Te Wฤhi Pounamu (which means โ€˜the place of greenstoneโ€™ in Mฤori) is the name given to this part of the West Coast because of the abundance of pounamu (greenstone/jade) to be found here. Soak up the atmosphere of vibrant Wellington. Famous for being a bit on the windy side, be prepared to ditch the hairspray and go with the flow. As always, your guide will introduce you to the city with an orientation tour โ€“ including a drive around the bays through central Wellington to the Botanic Gardens and Parliament Buildings. Youโ€™ll also get the chance to head up Mount Victoria for some of the best views in town. Today youโ€™ll also visit a nature reserve, Zealandia. Zealandia is a groundbreaking conservation project and the worldโ€™s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary. It has successfully reintroduced over 20 species of native wildlife into this area, some of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years. You will also stop by Weta Workshop, most famous for its creative contribution to all things Lord of the Rings. Take an optional tour to see prop-makers in action and learn about the immersive world of filmmaking. Wellington has a feast of cultural attractions and its crowning glory is Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand. Situated on Wellingtonโ€™s magnificent waterfront, this internationally acclaimed museum combines leading edge technology with traditional exhibits to tell the stories of New Zealandโ€™s land and people. The museum is free entry but you may like to opt for a tour from one of their experienced guides for a more in depth visit. If being outdoors is more your thing, head off to Kapiti Island for an optional nature tour. Here you can see endangered birds up close and learn more about New Zealandโ€™s unique flora and fauna. Our drive will take us through all kinds of scenery, from rolling hills to the spectacular peaks of the North Islandโ€™s volcanic plateau โ€“ Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Day 14: Taupล

Lake Taupล is actually a giant volcanic crater created 70,000 years ago in one of the biggest eruptions in history. Nowadays, itโ€™s one of NZโ€™s best spots for a holiday escape. And being New Zealand, there are plenty of adventure sports to be found there too! New Zealandโ€™s most famous day hike is also in the area. The 19.4 km Tongariro Crossing is an alpine crossing around Tongariro, one of the countryโ€™s most famous and most beautiful volcanoes. Itโ€™s a serious leg workout, but itโ€™s worth every minute for the incredible views and landscape. Turquoise and green lakes greet you at the top, along with vistas that stretch all the way to the coast. If youโ€™re looking for a thrill, we suggest skydiving over the lake or bungy jumping over New Zealandโ€™s longest river (and for the really brave, getting dunked in!). Day 19: Coromandel To Auckland

In the beautiful Coromandel, youโ€™ll have plenty of time for your guide to show you around. Sample the sandy beaches or simply enjoy the vibes. There are all sorts of ways to enjoy the Coromandel, including kayaking at iconic Cathedral Cove and soaking in hot pools. The Coromandel Peninsula is a paradise of beautiful beaches and misty rainforests. The drive here takes in plenty of quintessential North Island rolling farmland. Itโ€™s also home to the famous Hot Water Beach โ€“ thousands visit each year to dig their own personal hot tub. If the tide times allow, weโ€™ll grab our buckets and spades and get busy. Then, we hit the road for the final stretch of our journey together. The drive to Auckland is truly spectacular โ€“ the road twists and turns dramatically round the coastline as the skyline of New Zealandโ€™s largest city gradually comes into view. Special note: Due to severe damage caused by extreme weather in early 2023, the Cathedral Cove walking track is closed until further notice. You can still opt to kayak from Hahei to Cathedral Cove, or you can simply relax at Hahei Beach. Many roads on the Coromandel Peninsula also remain impassable. For this reason, some route adjustments will take place to ensure you are still able to experience New Zealand safely.
