Some 3* hotels may also not have AC. Elevators : guesthouses and 3* hotels do not have elevators in Romania (with few exceptions in hotels). A certain amount of steps will be involved. You will have to carry your own luggage, as help is not guaranteed to be available. Please pack wisely. Window shutters : most accommodations do not have window shutters in Romania. Most of the times curtains are present, but if you have trouble sleeping without shutters, please bring a sleeping mask. Background sounds : in Romanian countryside, the rooster, the dogs or the singing birds would be the first waking up in the morning. If you have trouble sleeping and prefer not to wake up early in the morning, we recommend earplugs.

  • Day 1 Day 1: Sunday: Budapest โ€“ Maramures

      Day 1: Sunday: Budapest โ€“ Maramures

      Your guide will meet at your hotel in Budapest in the morning. Departure for Romania. After a 3 hours drive across Eastern Hungary, you shall finally enter Romania. Stop in Satu Mare for lunch in a restaurant and continue eastwards for Maramures, the land of wooden architecture. 

      Stop on the way to visit the colorful Merry Cemetery from Sapanta.

      Dinner in a restaurant and accommodation in a 3* hotel in Sighetu Marmatiei.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Monday: Maramures

      In the morning, after breakfast, transfer to the village of Desesti to visit the wooden church, one of the eight wooden churches of Maramures included in UNESCO heritage. 

      From here, continue your journey with a stop in Breb. Take a walk in the village to discover the lifestyle of the locals. 

      The day will continue with the visit of the new monastery of Barsana, to admire its intriguing architecture, a mix of modern and traditional. Lunch in a restaurant.

      Panoramic cross-field transfer to Ieud village. Visit a second UNESCO wooden church and a small family-owned museum.

      After breakfast, departure for Bucovina, across the Carpathian Mountains. Stop in Ciocanesti to see the traditional decorated houses. Lunch on the way in a restaurant.

      Visit the painted monastery of Moldovita (UNESCO site), famous for itโ€™s Siege of Constantinople fresco scene. As decorating the Easter egg is an ancient Hutsul tradition that you must not miss, youโ€™ll have the chance to admire such an exhibition. 

      Continue the journey with the visit of the most famous of all painted monasteries in Bucovina: Voronet (UNESCO site).

      After breakfast, a long transfer to Transylvania ensues, which will take you on a panoramic road across the Eastern Carpathians. Lunch in a restaurant, on the way. 

      During the afternoon walk through Sighisoara โ€“ Transylvaniaโ€™s best preserved medieval town, also included in the UNESCO world heritage list, world-renowned for being Draculaโ€™s birth place. (All Dracula stories are to be taken with a pinch of salt, of course.)

      Continue the journey to Viscri to visit the 13th c. fortified church (UNESCO site). This rural establishment will unveil the best preserved and restored traditional Saxon village in Transylvania, one of the few where the community is still very much alive, where small rural businesses are surviving in a modern world.

      Breakfast and transfer to Sinaia for the visit of Peles Castle, the first castle built by the Romanian Monarchy during the 19th century. Chance to admire the personal arts collections of the royal family. Lunch in a restaurant.

      Return to Brasov, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Transylvania. Discover the Black Church, easternmost Gothic church in Europe, and enjoy a guided tour of the old town. Free time in the evening for dinner and a romantic walk.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Friday: Brasov โ€“ Bran โ€“ Transfagarasan Road โ€“ Sibiu

      Breakfast and transfer to Bran village to visit the so called โ€˜Draculaโ€™s Castleโ€™. Built in the Middle Ages and yet modernized at the beginning of the 20th century, Bran castle is now the most visited places in Romania. Lunch in a restaurant.

      On the way to Sibiu, follow the breathtaking Transfagarasan road, going up the Southern Carpathians  to Balea Lake, at over 2000m altitude. Enjoy a panoramic view upon Transylvanian highlands and continue downwards for Sibiu. 

      * Transfagarasan road is only open from June to September. When it is closed, you shall visit instead Prejmer fortified church (UNESCO).

      Named European Capital of Culture in 2007, Sibiu was the best defended fortified town in Transylvania throughout the Middle Ages. Free time in the evening for a restaurant dinner.

      In the morning, after breakfast, tour the four defensive walls of old Sibiu and discover the local landmarks. Departure for Hunedoara. Visit the largest Gothic castle in Romania, Corvin Castle (also known as Hunyadi Castle) which, as itโ€™s name already says it, belonged to the Hunyadi family, one of the most famous members of which was King Matthias the Just. Lunch in a restaurant. 

      Continue westwards, arriving in Timisoara in late afternoon. This city, where the revolution against the Communist regime started in 1989, is to be European Capital of Culture throughout 2021. Free time for shopping and admiring the beautiful Art-Nouveau and Baroque architecture.
