You will go directly to the famous Summer Palace of the Empress Dowager Cixi, an ideal place to get in the mood for China. The palace is an example of tradition and culture in China and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be enchanted by the classical architecture, ornate temple and Kunming Lake at the center of the complex.

You will explore the historic Tian’anmen Square in the heart of Beijing. Afterwards, you will visit the Forbidden City, where the Chinese emperors lived and ruled until the revolution in 1911 - the normal people, however, were denied access. Now the former imperial palace is a national sanctuary and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. You enter the Forbidden City through the Gate of Heavenly Peace and have ample time to stroll through the extensive palace grounds. The view of the curved roofs from the Coal Hill is particularly beautiful. In the afternoon you leave Beijing and drive north to the Great Wall, probably the most famous building in China and at the same time the largest structure in the world as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At sunset, when most visitors have already left, you can enjoy the breathtaking view undisturbed. On the way back to Beijing you will stop for a photo stop at the famous Bird’s Nest, the Olympic Center.

Early in the morning, when the locals start the day with sports exercises, dances or even Tai Chi exercises, visit the Temple of Heaven, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the lush green temple and park and enjoy the very special atmosphere in the early morning. During a stroll you will discover the hutongs of Beijing, huge labyrinths of traditional alleys with residential courtyards, small markets and cookshops. Here, the capital is still quite original, and life takes place on the street. During a visit to the home of a family, you will learn many interesting facts about the original life in the old quarters of Beijing. Then it’s time for a break and typical Chinese in a teahouse. The teahouse culture is widespread in China. It is the living epitome of the leisure life of the Chinese and the teahouse is a place where you can drink tea, relax and chat. Look forward to a culinary highlight at noon: the famous Peking duck. Later, you’ll be transferred to the train station for a high-speed train ride to Xi’an.

You will experience the twelve kilometer long city wall of Xi’an, which encloses the entire old city with its huge stone blocks and watchtowers. You will ride your bike along the wall. Then you’ll visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a Buddhist sanctuary, as well as the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, which once signaled the opening and closing of the mighty city gates in the empire. Then, with brush and ink stick, it’s all about writing beautifully during a calligraphy class. Afterwards, you will stroll through the lively old town, past cookshops, small markets and stalls of the Muslim Hui minority living in Xi’an. You will finally reach the Great Mosque complex and walk through the vast Chinese Garden with its pavilions. The day ends with a visit to the bustling night market and an evening night safari through light-filled Xi’an. Today, a highlight of the trip awaits you: the legendary Terracotta Army, about 150 life-size terracotta figures from the time of Qin Shihuangdi, the first emperor of China. It dates back to 210 BC and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll visit the impressive Terracotta Army, lined up for you. You’ll also visit the unique bronze chariot with horses in the accompanying museum. The entire complex is as impressive as it is huge. Xi’an Stela Forest is the largest museum of stelae in China. It owes its name to the numerous stelae that stood here in large quantities like trees in the forest. The museum is a good place to learn more about Chinese history and culture. Later, you will stroll through the local art street of Xi’an, a local market for Chinese calligraphy and painting. The train takes you comfortably to Wuhan and from there directly to Yichang, where your cruise on the Yangtze River starts. The "long river" as the Yangtze is translated, rightly deserves its name. With 6,380 kilometers it is the third longest river on earth. It flows from Tibet almost the entire west-east length of China, bringing water to the south of the country and making agriculture possible. Upon arrival in Yichang, you’ll head to dinner. Then it’s time to check into your cabin and end the day aboard your ship in Yichang harbor.

Today you can visit the city of the White Emperor. Baidicheng was designated as a cultural monument "Landscape and Recreation Area" in 2004 and has been on the monument list of the People’s Republic of China since 2006. The name of the city is based on the legend that white fog once provided a mysterious yet peaceful appearance and even a white dragon had been sighted. All these symbols indicated the existence of an emperor, whereupon a warlord of the Han Dynasty declared himself the "White Emperor" of Chengjia. The price of the excursion is 290 CNY per person.

Afterwards you will take the high speed train to Guilin. In southern China, in a picturesque landscape with fairytale-like karst cones and mountains, things are much quieter. The contrast could not be greater: coming from a high-rise landscape, the countless peaks of a mysterious rocky landscape now rise before you. You will drive to Yangshuo, where you will sit comfortably in the evening and enjoy your dinner. Enjoy the nature, the silence and fresh air as well as the slowly rising mist.

Let’s go to the rice terraces of Longsheng. On the way you will buy fresh and delicious fruit at a local farmer’s market, which you won’t find easily at home. Now it’s time to get off and change buses. In a shuttle bus you will go together with other travelers to the main entrance of the rice terraces. Afterwards, depending on the weather and arrival time, you will hike for about one and a half hours from Guzhuangzhai to Ping’an on narrow paths uphill over the rice terraces. On the way, you will again gain impressions of Chinese rural life, because the Zhuang minority, who have been cultivating rice by hand for centuries, live on the terraces. Once back at your guesthouse, you can relax a bit from the hike before ending the eventful day with a culinary adventure.

The driving distance is about 165 kilometers. The driving time is about 3 hours. The hike to the guesthouse covers about 3 - 4 kilometers. You will be on foot for about 1 ½ hours. The difference in altitude is about 200 meters.
On the trip to the rice terraces you cannot take your main luggage with you. It will be left guarded in the valley. We recommend that you bring a daypack so that you can easily carry your small overnight luggage. For the hike in the rice terraces you need sturdy shoes.

If you are unable to join the hike to the guesthouse, we can arrange an extra night of sightseeing in Yangshuo. There is no other alternative to reach the guesthouse. You will meet the group again at Guilin airport on day 14. We will be happy to make you an individual offer.

Don’t miss the beautiful sunrise over the rice terraces of Longsheng. Later, on the way down, you will walk through the Zhuang village and experience the daily life and culture of the people in the North Guangxi region. Back in Longsheng, you will drive to Guilin airport and fly to Shanghai in the late afternoon. You will take the Transrapid to the center of the metropolis.

Today you will experience Shanghai with all its facets. A stroll through the old town leads you through winding streets and past old wooden houses to the Yu Garden. The oasis in the middle of the city is a great example of Chinese horticulture. You can get an interesting insight into Shanghai’s cuisine in the snack street near the Yu Garden. Water snake from a wok is certainly only for the daring, but there are many other local delicacies to try. Continue by subway to Jinmao Tower in Pudong, Shanghai’s financial district. Until recently, the skyscraper was the tallest building in China. The view from the observation deck over the sea of houses of the giant metropolis is gigantic. On to the Bund, China’s most famous waterfront promenade! Lined with magnificent colonial buildings on one side and skyscrapers on the opposite side of the Huangpu River, history and modernity meet impressively here. End the day with a cocktail in a bar on the Bund overlooking the skyline and lights of Pudong: Wow moment and a drink are guaranteed.

Old and new. In the morning you will take a trip to the cozy water village of Zhujiaojiao, whose history goes back 500 years. Due to the numerous bridges from the Ming and Qing dynasties, the village is also known as the Venice of Shanghai. In the afternoon you will experience modern Shanghai on a walk through the former French protectorate with its countless small stores, galleries, bars and restaurants.
