2022 Hannibal - Barcelona To Rome

2022 Hannibal - Barcelona To Rome

This tour includes:

Accommodation

A key element in any great trip is memorable accommodation. Every night we strive to ensure that you donโ€™t forget (for good reasons of course!) your nightโ€™s stay. We look for unique accommodation, always at the upper end of the scale. We want you be be extremely comfortable as well as giving you an insight into the region you are travelling, through its buildings. We go for the beautiful lodges and wineries in Chile on the Che tour, the castles of Europe on the Lionheart tour (where else would you want to stay when following Richard the Lionheart!) and a mix of exceptional accommodation including monasteries, chalets and paradors on Hannibal. The accommodation is always an unexpected highlight for our guests.

Meals

Food and Wine is key to any great travelling experience. On a journey like ours, you need sustenance, but why not experience this sustenance in a deeply pleasurable way! We ensure you get this combination throughout the day. A great breakfast starts each day and snacks are supplied and available at any time you need. As for our picnic lunches, they are always a highlight for our guests and the envy of every other cyclist who rolls past! They are always filled with local fresh produce and we cater for all dietary requirements. Every evening meal is chosen carefully whether it be a 5 course degustation or at a local trattoria. You will never be disappointed with the amazing places we have found for you on tour. We have sommeliers on our guide team so as you ride through the vineyards or sit down for an aperitif they will be able to tell you all about it! Last but not least we know the importance of coffee in every cyclistโ€™s diet. In lots of places round the world, stopping for coffees is part of the pleasure and can be done every few miles! This is why, for our more remote tours where the perfect espresso is not available, we built into our support vehicle a commerical grade coffee machine (and made our guides take a barista course!) So at any time of the ride you feel like a caffeine boost or it is a โ€œmust stop and appreciate with a coffeeโ€ view, we can simply stop and make you one. Do you fancy an espresso at the top of Osorno Volcano overlooking Patagonia?

Transport

The Bikes We have taken a different tack (again!) from most touring companies here. We run exceptional tours. However what we have learnt is that there are a plethora of bike hire companies across Europe and around the world who hire exceptional bikes. Therefore we stick to our tour expertise and rather than own a tired fleet of bikes we engage with the best of these bike hire companies to provide you the best bike options possible and not just one choice. Therefore if you choose to hire a bike from us this ensures you have a choice of the latest models and best brands always. In Europe we offer Pinarello, Trek and Specialized and if you have a special request let us know as we may be able to track it down! In South America we currently have access to Trek and Canyon and in Australia we run Cannondale. With our excellent relationship with these companies we are able to offer more than competitive rates and we pass these on to you, to enable you not only to experience the best tour but also to potentially experience a truly special steed too!

This whole area is extremely popular with cyclists and pro teams from around the world come here for the quiet roads and challenging riding. After lunch a slow wind through the tourist district of Girona to give you a taste of this lovely town before the climb up to Angels lookout with views down to the coast and the Pyrenees to the north. We leave the Costa Brava today and head north towards the imposing Pyrenees Mountains. First however, we need to hit the Mediterranean for a coffee and optional explore of the Empuries ruins. From here we head north and whilst we donโ€™t by any means take these mountains on at their highest point we do still experience some great climbing as we leave Spain and head into France. Our destination is the quaint town of Ceret which has a proud artistic heritage with Picasso, among others, having once called it home.

  • Day 4 Ceret To Duilhac-Sous-Peyrepertuse

We awake to a French breakfast and beautiful rolling hills as we continue north staying away from the busy coast. Our first full day in France takes us deep into the beguiling region of the Languedoc as we truly find the road less travelled. With medieval hilltop villages, rolling vines and the immense splendour of the Cevennes this region is a cyclistโ€™s delight. It was also an area in which the Cathar religion took root in the 12th century and where a number of their fortresses survive to this day. Indeed, our hotel for the night is situated directly below the striking Peyrepertuse castle, a Cathar fortress built on an imposing 1000m defensive crag.

  • Day 5 Duilhac-Sous-Peyrepertuse To Carcassonne
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Duilhac-Sous-Peyrepertuse To Carcassonne

      On the Road - Distance: 94km I 58 miles | Elevation: 1112m I 3648ft

We continue to explore the beautiful region of Languedoc as we head towards the fairytale city of Carcassonne. For most of the day we are still in the foothills of the Pyrenees so the ride has a fair few undulations but as is the case with most of the riding in this region we pretty much have roads to ourselves. Our hotel is situated in the fortified Cite de Carcassonne which was granted UNESCO status in 1997 and acts as a beacon as we descend into the Aude lowlands.

  • Day 6 Carcassonne Interlude
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Carcassonne Interlude

Enjoy the Rest Day - City Tour, Wine Tasting, Relax.

UNESCO Carcassonne is a special location to be enjoyed. This morning on offer is a guided tour of Citรฉ de Carcassonne. Early evening we will have a wine tasting followed by an exceptional  dinner in the medieval Citรฉ. For those wishing to ride there is an excellent morning option. The riders will be back well in time for an afternoon wine tasting and dinner.

      Carcassonne To Olargues

      On the Road - Distance: 115km I 75 miles I Elevation 1874m I 6148ft

We meander our way out of Carcassonne and for the first part of the ride we spin our way across the flatlands to the north of the city before heading up in to the rugged hills of the Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc โ€“ the high Languedoc. Once again we find ourselves on awesome cycling roads which are inexplicably free of tourists. Our picturesque destination is Lamalou-les-Bains for a dip in the thermal baths followed by a shuttle to dinner in Olargues โ€“ voted one of Franceโ€™s most beautiful villages and site of the historic Devils Bridge.

  • Day 8 Olargues To Sommieres
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Olargues To Sommieres

      On the Road - Distance: 124km I 776miles I Elevation: 1444m I 4738ft

One of the longest days of the tour as we leave Herault and enter into Languedocโ€™s most eastern region Gard. With fewer undulations and such varied terrain, the day is a delight. We pass by the incredible Clamouse cave on the way and take in the Gorges dโ€™Herault and the majestic Pic Loup cliffs. All our picnics are examples of excellent local fare but today with the longer distance we go all out! Our destination tonight is the quaint town of Sommieres which has a rich Roman history and an impressive medieval centre.

  • Day 9 Sommieres To Villeneuve-Les-Avignon
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Sommieres To Villeneuve-Les-Avignon

      On the Road - Distance: 105km I 66miles I Elevation: 1111m I 3645m

We end our first week of riding to the Rhone River which is on the border with Provence. On the way we visit (and walk or ride over) the Pont du Gard which bears testament to the engineering genius of the Romans and is a great place for a coffee stop. We then cycle through vineyards and the Mediterranean landscape known as garrigue as we head towards Avignon. This UNESCO listed city was home to the Popes from 1309 -1429 during the Catholic schism. It is now a hugely popular tourist destination so we take the best and most relaxing option staying at Villeneuve-lรจs-Avignon, a stunning town and actually where the Popes lived just a 5 minute trip from Avignon. This gives us a great base to relax in but also the opportunity to duck into Avignon to explore the stunning town.

  • Day 10 Villeneuve-Les-Avignon Rest Day
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Villeneuve-Les-Avignon Rest Day

      Rest Day

Stage 1 is complete and it is a good opportunity to enjoy some rest and recuperation in preparation for the most iconic leg of Hannibalโ€™s journey โ€“ Across the Alps! Avignon serves as a great spot to explore but closer to our hotel are many temptations so you may not make it that far!

OPTION TO START FROM HERE IF RIDERS WISH

  • Day 11 Villeneuve-Lรจs-Avignon To Nyons
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Villeneuve-Lรจs-Avignon To Nyons

      On the Road - With or without Ventoux - Distance: 137km I 85 miles I Elevation: 2366m I 7762ft OR Combe de Milan - Distance: 106km I 66miles I Elevation: 1214m I 3982ft

Today we offer a choice of routes as we head north towards the Alps. After a coffee in Chรขteauneuf-du-Pape, where we will grab some bottles for a later tasting.... our route skirts the โ€˜Giant of Provenceโ€™, otherwise known as Mont Ventoux. Whilst we donโ€™t imagine that Hannibal went looking for extra climbing we canโ€™t pass by this cycling mecca without offering you the chance to climb it. You therefore have the choice of taking on the classic Tour de France climb from Bedoin and descending into Malaucene, or riding around the base of the mountain instead. Our destination is the pleasant market town of Nyons which places us perfectly for our Alpine assault.

  • Day 12 Nyons To Chichilianne
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Nyons To Chichilianne

      On the Road - Distance: 111km I 69miles I Elevation: 2179km I 7149ft

Heading north up through the foothills of the Alps we ride into the Drศme region. The mountains loom all around us as we aim for Chichilianne, a tiny French town nestled in a valley between the Vercors and ร‰crins National Parks. The cycling today is spectacular with picture postcard Alpine scenery and a nice balance of climbing and descending. Distance wise it is a fair undertaking though and as a result the cumulative elevation gain makes this a tough day with Col de Menรฉe an iconic climb to finish the day with.

  • Day 13 Chichilianne To La Grave
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Chichilianne To La Grave

      On the Road - Distance: 104km I 65miles I Elevation: 1944m I 6378ft OR WITH Alpe dโ€™Huez - 128km I 80miles I 3689m I 12103ft

Todayโ€™s ride is on beautiful quiet Alpine roads โ€“ it is exceptional cycling. We are heading to La Grave via Bourg dโ€™Oisan. The regular ride is challenging as we cross the broad switchbacked Col Ornon before descending into Bourg for lunch. Bourg dโ€™Oisan sits at the bottom of Alpe dโ€™Huez so from here you have a decision to make... Continue up the first (and more challenging) half of Col du Lautaret to our Alpine Interlude destination La Grave. Or, for those who canโ€™t resist icons...take on the 21 switchbacks of Alpe dโ€™Huez. To top this off we will descend via Col Sarenne as the Tour de France did in 2013. This descent is spectacular but goat track like! It brings us down on the Lac du Chambon where we rejoin the route for the last 15km into La Grave.

NOTE: Tomorrow is an interlude day. It is possible to climb Alpe Dโ€™Huez tomorrow but it is also possible to climb it now and rest tomorrow! It is your choice, we will support you to do either or both!

  • Day 14 La Grave Interlude
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      La Grave Interlude

Relaxing Options - La Grave - Village Exploration, Ice Caves and Extensive Wine Lists!

The village of La Grave has settled its stone and slate houses on a sunny slope in the heart of the Massif des ร‰crins, facing the impressive Peak de la Meije that rises to an altitude of 3983m. La Grave is a Mecca for mountain climbing and also a key venue for skiers seeking thrills who come from all over the world to challenge each other on a 2150 m vertical drop for the yearly Derby de la Meije.

The village is a lovely place to relax. The views of the glacier and surrounding peaks are spectacular and you could easily spend a day sitting outside the Edelweiss appreciating the natural beauty of the area. However, there are some excellent options for spending a relaxed day.

Firstly, the village of La Grave has preserved all its character: steep, narrow streets, stone houses and, at the top of the village, two religious buildings, Notre-Dame-de-lโ€™Assomption church and Pรฉnitents Blancs chapel. Walking around this unspoiled village is a real pleasure. For this reason it is recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Secondly, for some adventure off the bike catch the Meije cable car. The cable car takes you to the Ruillans Pass at 3211m and to the Girose Glacier. You will contemplate a grandiose panorama: at your feet glaciers and crevasses, near the Meije (3983m) and in the distance peaks as far as the eye can see from Vercors to Mont Blanc.  At the top station, youโ€™ll find a mountain restaurant with a sunny terrace where you can rest in a deck chair in the sun while admiring the breathtaking view and taking in the alpine atmosphere. The ice cave and its numerous sculptures are located 10 minutes walk from the cable car.

Lastly, Hotel Edelweiss is lovely and it does have an extensive wine list gathered by owners Marlon and Robin from all over Europe.  It is a pleasure to sample (as we will do on both nights we stay here!), relax in the bar, chat with them, enjoy the views. With big days in the mountains already conquered and more to come this could be just what the legs desire!

  • Day 15 La Grave To Saint-Veran
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      La Grave To Saint-Veran

      On the Road - With Col du Galibier - Distance: 105km / 65m | Elevation: 2994m / 9823ft OR Without Galibier - Distance: 88km / 55mi | Elevation: 2615m / 8579ft

A serious climbing day with Col du Galibier as a mid-morning optional loop. If you have the legs we suggest going for this climb because it is more often than not our ridersโ€™ favourite of the tour. After climbing into the Haute Alpes Isรจre we then descend for 30km into the pleasant town of Brianรงon for lunch. After lunch we take on Col dโ€™Izoard, a Tour de France regular and another spectacular climb. We descend to the quiet village of Arvieux, surrounded by 3000 metre peaks. A fast roll into the Queyras valley takes us to our lunch spot - Chateau Queyras where Hannibal was trapped before making an escape over the Alps and into Italy. Our destination tonight is another of Franceโ€™s most beautiful villages Saint Veran. With a climb finish our class hotel and michelin star restuarant are well earned!

  • Day 16 Saint Veran To Costigliole Saluzzo
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Saint Veran To Costigliole Saluzzo

      On the Road - Distance: 82km I 51miles I Elevation: 1134m I 3720ft

We head out of our little hamlet  towards Col Agnel โ€“ it is a long gradual climb but the descent is worth every minute of pain. This is probably the longest descent in Europe! It is again beautiful mountain scenery โ€“quiet villages, beautiful autumnal trees changing colour, and of course the peaks which surround us. We get to Italy at 2600m and descend for 50km to our castle hotel in Costigliole Saluzzo. We are in Italy and will enjoy our pasta tonight!

  • Day 17 Costigliole Saluzzo To Alba
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Costigliole Saluzzo To Alba

      On the Road - Distance: 87km I 54miles I Elevation: 769m I 2523ft

Our ride today takes us into the heart of the Piedmont region along some of the most stunning ridge lines a cyclist can find. We head into the region of Monferrato and cross the Tanaro River on our way to the famed Langhe hills. Considered the spiritual home of the nebbiolo grape this area gave birth to a number of Italyโ€™s most esteemed wines including the โ€˜King of winesโ€™ โ€“ Barolo โ€“ and the renowned Barbaresco. Our destination is the beautiful town of Alba which is famed both for its truffle fair and the heady scent of nutella that permeates the air.

  • Day 18 Alba To Gavi
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Alba To Gavi

      On the Road - Distance: 113km I 70miles I Elevation: 2343m I 7687ft

Leaving Alba we once more enjoy the stunning ridge lines afforded by the Langhe hills as we head into the Monferrato towards Acqui Terme. From there we cross the Bormida River and meander our way towards our final destination near the town of Gavi. In doing so we follow in the tracks of some of the greats of Italian cycling who hail from this part of the world including the โ€˜campionissimoโ€™ Fausto Coppi. On arrival at our fantastic hotel youโ€™ll have  the opportunity to enjoy one of the regions finest white wines โ€“ Gavi di Gavi.

  • Day 19 Gavi Rest Day
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Gavi Rest Day

      Rest, Explore, Relax

Villa Sparina, Gavi is an ideal place for some well earned relaxation after crossing the Alps. The hotel is spectacular and after a Michelin star meal on the grounds, tour of the cellars and vineyards there are options both on the bike and off.

Within 10 minutes then are many options:

Head into Gavi, wander to the fortress and enjoy the village and a great coffee and biscotti.

Visit the Museo del Ciclismo, dedicated to the champions (including local hero Fausto Coppi) of cycling.

For a shopping trip go to Serravalle Designer Outlet.

For the Roman history lovers check out Libarna, a lovely Roman town.

Want to ride more? No problem! Check out the On the Road section for today and join the warm up group for Stage 3.

Or you may find it hard to leave the villa! It is beautiful and we will explore the vineyards, tour the cellars and if people are interested we could even arrange a cooking class...

  • Day 20 Gavi To Trebbia
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Gavi To Trebbia

      On the Road - Distance: 106km I 66miles I Elevation: 2164m I 7100ft

We leave Piedmont today as we head up into the hills of an area known as the Oltrepo Pavese. This name refers to its geographic position to the south of the mighty Po River and in the proximity of the university city of Pavia. Todayโ€™s ride takes us into a far more rustic and rugged area of Italy. Untouched by tourism we roll our way through southern Lombardy past the Santโ€™Alberto di Butrio into Emilia Romagna. For the next 3 days we will traverse the northern edge of the Apennines. The riding is fantastic, remote and beautiful.

  • Day 21 Trebbia To Tabiano
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Trebbia To Tabiano

      On the Road - Distance: 101km / 63mi I Elevation: 2157m / 7077ft

Todayโ€™s riding keeps us in the quiet agricultural foothills of the Apennines. We pass some great sites such as Castel Arquato and Vigoleno. We really โ€˜rollโ€™ across the northern foothills of the Apennines and the terrain is challenging. However this riding is beautiful and it keeps us away from the busy industrial plains to the north. In so doing we will explore a remote and beautiful part of Italy that few tourists ever see โ€“ the occasional steep ramp is part of the charm.

  • Day 22 Tabiano To Reggio Emilia
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Tabiano To Reggio Emilia

      On the Road - Distance: 100km I 60mi I Elevation: 1325m / 4347ft

We continue in the Apennine foothills skirting east for much of the day as we head towards our chosen pass over this mountain chain that is more than deserving of our respect. Great culinary destinations surround us today such as Piacenza, Parma and Modena. Our destination is the picturesque town of Reggio nellโ€™Emilia where we will stay on the main square in an hotel that has provided hospitality for over 500 years.

  • Day 23 Reggio Emilia To Poretta Terme
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Reggio Emilia To Poretta Terme

      On the Road - Distance: 111km I 69mi I Elevation: 1619m I 5312ft

Often referred to as the โ€˜spine of Italyโ€™ the Apennines cover the length of the peninsula of Italy. Our ride today takes us up to the Tuscan- Emilian border in the heart of these mountains. Our route is historically accurate and also spectacular as we roll up through the foothills to Montecorone and Zocca, two incredibly photogenic medieval villages. The sometimes rough roads are definitely worth this gorgeous route. After our lunch in the later we will follow the ridgeline before dropping into the Porretta valley where Hannibal marched his troops south!

  • Day 24 Porretta Terme To Fiesole
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Porretta Terme To Fiesole

      On the Road - Distance: 90km I 56mi I 1981m I 6499ft

Our day starts with an easy roll continuing down the Porretta valley, however it is not long before we have to climb the final sections of the Apennines to earn our entry into Tuscany. After traversing over to Vernio we head towards Lago di Bilancino. However, first we stop at the jewel of the Mugello - Barberino di Mugello. We will spend much of today in the Mugello region, a beautiful rugged area of Tuscany. The Giro was here in 2017 and we will follow their route in this region before descending to Fiesole, which sits proudly above Florence, looking down upon all of the Arno plains.

  • Day 25 Florence Interlude
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Florence Interlude

      Tour, Ride or Relax

So many options in Florence for an interlude day.

      1. If you havenโ€™t been to Florence before then it is a must. The cradle of the Renaissance, it is romantic, enchanting and utterly irresistible. Florence (Firenze) is a place to feast on world-class art and gourmet Tuscan cuisine. We will offer shuttles in and there are also regular buses and taxis. It is only 15 minutes away.

      2. There are always riding options for the super keen but our option is a relaxed one, check the On the Road section.

      3. Fiesole is a lovely place to relax. Enjoy the village - it is one of Tuscanyโ€™s best. Take in the Etruscan and Roman ruins, or just relax at our hotel and take in the views and facilities.

  • Day 26 Fiesole To Siena
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Fiesole To Siena

      On the Road - Distance: 99km I 62mi I Elevation: 1821m I 5974ft

A must on any Tuscan trip, Siena is our destination tonight. However, the riding is so good before it you may never wish to arrive! We head down into the Arno valley crossing the river of the same name to climb into the Chianti hills. The riding is exceptional - vineyards, olives, rolling hills and typically Tuscan hilltop towns spotted across the landscape and postcard scenes at every turn. Tuscany is renowned for its beauty and we will quickly see why.

  • Day 27 Siena To Cortona
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Siena To Cortona

      On the Road: Distance: 106km I 66mi I Elevation: 1727m I 5666ft

We head straight out of Siena into the Val dโ€™Orcia, a stunning UNESCO recognised landscape. The riding is rolling but this is truly the idylic Tuscany imagined when people dream of visiting the area. We roll through Asciano, San Giovanni dโ€™Asso and Montisi to Pienza for lunch. Known as the "Ideal City" it is a lovely place to pause and appreciate this exceptional region. From lunch we ride along the top of a ridgeline before plunging into Montepulciano and beyond to the plain as we cross towards Umbria and Trasimeno, where Hannibal again came up against a formidable Roman army. We are in Tuscany one more night at the beautiful medieval hilltown of Cortona which will test our legs at the end of a rolling day!

  • Day 28 Cortona To Todi
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Cortona To Todi

      On the Road - Distance: 98km / 60mi I Elevation: 1093m / 3586ft

Leaving Cortona we head south to Lake Trasimene, scene of one of Hannibalโ€™s greatest victories. Local authorities have set up signs to describe the battle between Hannibal and the Roman army as you skirt the lake so we have the opportunity to take our time this morning and appreciate the history.  From here we head to the Museo di Annibale, a brand new museum opened in 2017 dedicated to Hannibal and the battle.

For those who want to just ride, donโ€™t worry, the scenery is fantastic, as is the road! We roll around the lake and down to its shores where we enjoy coffee before continuing south into the heart of Umbria. Umbria has its own beauty - it is a little more rugged and less pristine than Tuscany but equally as beguiling. Our destination tonight is Todi, another lovely little hill town with a final climb challenge to boot!

  • Day 29 Todi To Forcone
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Todi To Forcone

      On the Road - Distance: 107km / 66mi I Elevation: 1662m / 5453ft

From Todi we continue south on our metaphorical descent towards the gates of Rome. The reality is that it is still quite rolling as we ride alongside a series of inland lakes through the Umbrian countryside and into Lazio. We pay a visit to the โ€˜dying cityโ€™ of Civita di Bagnoregio that has to be seen to be believed. Then we head past Lago Bolsena and Vico, former volcanoes to our Borgo which sets up our final dash into the heart of Rome.

      Forcone To Rome

      On the Road - Distance: 69km / 43mi I Elevation: 723m / 2372ft

Hannibal might never have breached the Servian walls of Rome but we have found a way into the heart of the city alongside the Tiber River. From the tranquillity of our hotel we embark towards the Eternal City. Initially we follow the signs for the Via Flaminia before skirting the verdant Parco Veio. Before we reach the banks of the Tiber we have a bit of climbing to do as we discover that there are more than just the Seven Hills within the Imperial City. Our final destination is the lively district of Trastevere.
