Isolated from the outside world for thousands of years, this village of roughly 1200 people has preserved its own unique language and way of life for generations. Homes are built tier style up the side of the mountain using stone work and many roofs are still made of earth and mud. A new road makes access to this mountain escape a simpler endeavor than it once was. Some say the scenery on the ride up, as you pass through โ€™cloud catcher canyonโ€™, is even more exciting than the village itself.

Many houses retain box windows, arched doorways and red-tiled roofs, thereโ€™s an antique mosque and several remnant fortifications. The square-plan of Sumu Gala Tower at the very southwestern end of the village commands a picture-perfect valley view towards distant snow-topped peaks.

At the northernmost end of Ilisu there are fine views from the UludaฤŸ restaurant-resort. Turn right and hike 40 minutes uphill to find a locally famous waterfall.
