Itinerary of your trip Kenai Fjords Adventure

  • Day 1 Day 1: Train To Seward, Resurrection River Trail Hike
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 1: Train To Seward, Resurrection River Trail Hike

We'll rise early in Anchorage and begin our journey with a four-hour scenic train ride on the famous Alaska Railroad, heading south to historic Seward on the Coastal Classic route. We'll hug the coastline along the Turnagain Arm where there are great views of the train as it rounds several scenic points, then south of Portage the train separates from the highway and enters a truly remote and rugged section of track where we'll head through the Placer River Valley, right past the impressive ice wall of Spencer Glacier and over the 1,063 foot pass of the Kenai Mountains. Once we arrive weโ€™ll head out for a hike on the Resurrection River trail, walking through dense spruce/hemlock forest with only occasional views of the river valley and mountains. The raw beauty and bedrock of the glacial terminus turns into lush forest along the river - real-time demonstration of plant succession, moving from ice age to rain forest in such a small area. After exploring the trail, we'll check into our hotel for the next 3 nights. Harbor 360 Hotel is the premier waterfront hotel in the scenic harbor town with spacious, comfortable guest rooms, harborside or mountainside views, and we'll enjoy dinner as we toast to a great trip to come!Harbor 360 Hotel, Seward (All meals)Hiking Distance: 6.4 kilometres (4 miles), 1-2 hours Elevation Gain: 131 metres (429ft) Elevation Loss: 131 metres (429ft)

  • Day 2 Day 2: Hike Harding Icefield
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Hike Harding Icefield

After a hearty breakfast for our big day ahead, we'll make our way to the Harding IceField where we'll hike along the Exit Glacier Overlook Trail. It's a well maintained, moderately strenuous trail providing expansive views of Exit Glacier in its own glacially carved valley. If you're keen for more of a challenge you can opt for a more challenging hike to view the 700-square-mile Harding IceField, the largest in North America (seven miles wide!). The trail meanders through alder and cottonwood forest as well as heather-filled meadows, rising through the forest and ultimately ends up well above the tree line to an awe-inspiring vantage point of the icefield. The peak of the trail is a peephole to ice ages past - a horizon of snow and ice stretches as far as the eye can see, broken only by an occasional lonely peak, known as a nunatak. We'll head back to Seward after our day's hike and enjoy a much-deserved harbor view while soaking in the hot tub or swimming in Sewardโ€™s only hotel pool at our accommodation, followed by dining on local Alaskan cuisine.Harbor 360 Hotel, Seward (All meals)Overlook Trail Hiking Distance: 3.7 kilometres (2.3 miles), 2-3 hoursElevation Gain: 131 metres (429ft)Elevation Loss: 131 metres (429ft)Harding Ice Field Trail Hiking Distance: 12.8 kilometres, +/-m, (8 miles), 7 hoursElevation Gain: 1,158 metres (3,800ft)Elevation Loss: 1,158 metres (3,800ft)

  • Day 3 Day 3: Kayak Resurrection Bay, Kenai Fjords National Park Wilderness Cruise
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Kayak Resurrection Bay, Kenai Fjords National Park Wilderness Cruise

Today we'll get to explore Kenai Fjords National Park by kayak and boat! This morning we'll get fitted in boots and kayak skirts before heading out on a paddle along the shoreline and protected coves of Resurrection Bay, searching for Dallโ€™s Porpoises, Stellar sea lions and orca whales! Afterwards we'll board a small ship, meeting the captain and crew, before departing for the wilderness. Kenai Fjords National Park, established in 1980, protects the Harding Icefield, a narrow fringe of forested land between the mountains and the sea, and the deeply indented coastline. The park is inhabited by a variety of terrestrial and marine mammals, including brown and black bears, moose, sea otters, harbor seals, humpback and killer whales. Checking out tidal glaciers and abundant sea life from the shipโ€™s deck, our naturalist guide will share their expertise on the region while our cruise glides past seals, whales and puffins as we explore coastal rainforests, tidewater glaciers and remote Alaskan islands. Lunch will be provided on board and upon arrival back on shore in the afternoon, we'll have time to relax back at our accommodation or there's the option to check out the Sealife Center, Alaskaโ€™s premier public aquarium and only permanent marine mammal rehabilitation facility before joining the group for dinner.Harbor 360 Hotel, Seward (All meals)Kayaking Time: 2-3 hoursCruise Time: 6 hours

Weโ€™ll pedal along Granite Creek, past wildflowers, waterfalls and alpine valleys before turning onto a quiet highway and make our way to the old Gold Rush town of Hope. Day 5: Hike Winner Creek &Amp; Byron Glacier

After breakfast, we set off for an early morning hike along Winner Creek. Beginning at the Alyeska Hotel, hike 8.9 kilometres (5.5 miles) roundtrip through lush evergreen forests and past a rushing glacial blue river on this out-and-back trail. Explore the wonders of North America's northernmost rainforest before returning to the hotel. We'll enjoy lunch and time to relax then begin our afternoon hike to Byron Glacier. The valley carved by the glacier starts to spread out before us while behind views of the mountains above Portage Lake start to spread out as the trail climbs closer to the glacier. As we approach the end of the trail, the trees and shrubs give way and weโ€™ll emerge on the valley floor, with great views of the Byron Glacier above. On our last morning, weโ€™ll enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading off for a bike ride along the Girdwood Pathway to Indian Creek. Dramatic views of the water and mountains led to the designation of the Seward Scenic Highway; part of the trail uses the old road, which was rerouted, and part of the trail occupies an old rail bed, and along the trail we'll find interpretive signs of the interesting geologic features. Weโ€™ll then be transferred back to Anchorage to say farewell to our travel companions and beloved guides, we can drop you at either your hotel or at the Anchorage Airport.
