Day 2: Exploring The Harmony Trail & The Baptism Site At Bethany

The Harmony Trail at As-Salt and the Baptism Site at Bethany This tour sets off to the hilltop town of As-Salt in the morning, which is a 40-mintue drive from the city of Amman. As-Salt was a trading link between the Jordan Valley and the Eastern Desert as well as the former capital of Amman. Your guide will show you around the snaking narrow streets and point out the elaborate Islamic architecture made from yellow limestone. Today, this town is an example of the religious and cultural friendship between the local Muslim and Christian population. You will stroll along the self-designed โ€™Harmony Trailโ€™ and learn more about the history of the town and its people. Lunch will be served with a local family and you will get to sample some traditional delicacies. After lunch, you can meander out of the hills to the Baptism Site at Bethany. This site was recently excavated and is believed to be the biblical โ€™Bethany-beyond-the-Jordanโ€™ - the place where John baptised Jesus Christ. You will also see an assortment of churches, caves and pools from the Roman and Byzantine periods. Your guide will describe to you how both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI visited this area. An electric minibus will drive you from the visitors centre to the three sites of Mar Elias, the Baptism Pools and John the Baptistโ€™s Church. The tour will conclude back at your hotel in Amman where you can rest in the evening. | OVERNIGHT: Amman hotel. | MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day 3 Day 3: Amman & Jerash
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Amman & Jerash

We start today by visiting the nearby city of Jerash, home of one of the worldโ€™s most well preserved Roman architecture sites outside of Italy. For centuries, this site was buried under layers of sand and was only discovered 70 years ago. Jerash is a significant model of Roman urbanism with its public squares, plazas, colonnaded streets, hilltop temples and theatres. In the afternoon we spend time exploring more of Amman and understanding its history. Your expert guide will describe in detail how many archeological discoveries have uncovered remains from the Neolithic period as well as the Hellenistic and late Roman to Arab Islamic Ages. The walking tour will begin at the Citadel, home to the ancient Hercules Temple, the Byzantine Church, the Umayyad Palace and a 6000-seater Roman theatre, built during the Roman Period. This theatre is still used as a space to display cultural events. | OVERNIGHT: Amman hotel. | MEALS: Breakfast. | EXTRAS: Amman evening food tasting tour

  • Day 4 Day 4: Travel To Petra
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Travel To Petra

Driving along the Kingโ€™s Highway to Petra In the morning, you will vacate your hotel in Amman and drive along the Kingโ€™s Highway to Petra. This lengthy route will allow you to soak up the enchanting scenery, the deep wadis, farmlands, olive groves and rural villages. Before you arrive in Petra, the tour will stop at Madaba and you can check out the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George - famous for its 6th century-old Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land and other biblical sites. Your guide will lead you to Mount Nebo, the known burial place of Moses with some magnificent views of the Holy Land. The tour will then drive south over more gaping wadis and canyons to reach the Kerak Castle - one of many Crusader fortresses sprinkled across Jordan in the 12th century. The Crusaders called the castle โ€™Crac des Moabitesโ€™ or โ€™Karakโ€™ in Moab. This castle is a perfect point for viewing the hills and plains. After you have arrived in Petra, you can relax for the rest of the evening. You also have the option to see the city with the Petra by Candlelight tour through the Siq to the Treasury. | OVERNIGHT: Petra hotel. | MEALS: Breakfast. | EXTRAS: Petra by Candlelight (arranged locally)

  • Day 5 Day 5: Exploring Petra
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 5: Exploring Petra

This day is all about adventuring around the famous Nabatean site of Petra. This site was the capital of the ancient Nabatean commercial empire until the Romans seized power in 106AD. Sitting on the edge of Wadi Aruba, the Siq is the best way to get into the site. It is a twisting tunnel that cuts through the canyon walls and hills. In Petra, you will soon see that there are not many freestanding buildings as the Nabateans liked to construct their homes into the pink sandstone cliffs. Your guide will take you into the city and you can also enjoy some free time to wander around by yourself. The Siq is the starting point for the guided tour and continues to Khazneh, one of the most impressive temples in Petra. As you walk, your guide will describe how the houses were carved and the spiritual importance of the site. The tour will also include the ancient ruined Roman amphitheater and the colonnaded street. In your free time you should head up the gorge to the Monastery - the largest of Petraโ€™s carved monuments. This uphill walk can take some time, but the vista over the Wadi Aruba and the Jordan Valley is worth it. If you have the energy, keep going until you reach the High Place of Sacrifice and the Lion Fountain. | OVERNIGHT: Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum. | MEALS: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 6 Day 6: Wadi Rum Jeep Safari & Visiting The Dead Sea
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Wadi Rum Jeep Safari & Visiting The Dead Sea

The tour will drive into the desert landscape of Wadi Rum. You should keep an eye out for the copper-coloured rocky โ€™jebelsโ€™ that inspired the writer TE Lawrence during the Arab Revolt and appeared in the movie Lawrence of Arabia. Traversing by jeep safari, the tour will go past sharp cliffs and striking rock formations. The tour will turn north and go towards the Dead Sea - one of the worldโ€™s most remarkable destinations. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth at 400 metres below sea level and is a most stunning sight. A variety of rivers including the River Jordan flow into this sea. As these rivers are landlocked, they then evaporate and create a combination of salt and minerals, which make high quality products for industries. There is a range of mountains surrounding the Dead Sea and the hills of Jerusalem lie to the west. This region is now sparsely populated, but was believed to have been home to the five biblical cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Adman, Zebouin and Zoar (Bela). You will also get a chance to bath in these salubrious and salty waters. As a result of the large amount of salt, normal swimming is not possible so it is better to float or sit in the water. You should avoid getting any salt water in your eyes, as it will sting. The day will conclude back at your hotel in Amman. | OVERNIGHT: Amman hotel. | MEALS: Breakfast

Day 8: Cairo, Pyramids & Sphinx At Giza. To Luxor

Probably the most recognizable ancient buildings in the world, these three pyramids were built pyramids were built by the Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure around 2500 years BC. Our Egyptologist guide will start your introduction into Egyptian history here with information on how and why pyramids were built and how they fit into the whole ancient Pharaonic story. Youโ€™ll have the chance to climb down inside one of these pyramids if you wish (and if youโ€™re not claustrophobic!). Our next visit is the majestic Sphinx, which nestles nearby, and was uncovered completely only in the 1920s. In the afternoon we then drive south through towns and villages along the banks of the River Nile to Luxor where we check into our hotel. There is an optional tour early this morning to drive to the amazing UNESCO world heritage site at Abu Simbel which sits on the banks of Lake Nasser about 3 hours away from Aswan. The temples here were built by Ramses II and are one of Egyptโ€™s most impressive and fascinating sites, especially because they are carved into the hillside rather than built independently, and were completely dismantled and moved to their present location when Lake Nasser was flooded. If you donโ€™t visit Abu Simbel you can explore Aswanโ€™s markets and Corniche this morning or visit the Nubian Museum which has an excellent collection covering the history of the Nubian people in the region. This afternoon weโ€™ll take a boat trip to visit one of Egyptโ€™s most beautifully situated temples which was also reclaimed from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. This is the Temple of Philae, which was dedicated to Isis. Later we board a traditional Nile felucca and sail a little way out of Aswan before mooring up for the night. Our separate facilities boat will join with us from time to time during the day and moor up with us at night. This boat helps us protect the environment of the banks of the Nile, having a proper toilet and showers on board as well as a hygienic kitchen. You sleep on the deck of the boat, with mattresses, blankets and mosquito nets provided. This is a fun but basic experience, and you can upgrade the night sleeping on the felucca to an additional night in a hotel in Aswan if you prefer. | OVERNIGHT: On board felucca. | MEALS: Breakfast, Dinner. | EXTRAS: Abu Simbel overland, Upgrade from felucca to hotel in Aswan

We spend some more time sailing on the Nile this morning, and after lunch with the felucca crew, we bid them a reluctant goodbye and drive north to Luxor. Luxor is the jewel in Egyptโ€™s crown with the largest concentrations of ancient ruins in the Nile Valley, if not the world. These are split across both banks of the Nile, with the City of the Dead on the West Bank with many mortuary temples and tombs cut into the rocky mountains, and with the Temples of Luxor and Karnak and their connecting Avenue of Sphinxes the highlights on the East Bank. Later this evening there is an optional tour available to Luxor Temple which is right in the middle of town and beautifully lit up at night. Youโ€™ll can also head into town to explore some of Luxorโ€™s popular outdoor cafes, perhaps enjoying a few games of backgammon and trying a shisha pipe with the locals. Your afternoon is then free to relax in the hotel, or take an optional tour to explore the huge temple complex at Karnak. A spectacular hot air balloon flight over the west bank of the Nile is also available today (expect another early start to catch sunrise as the balloon rises). Note: If the group has a very small number (2-3) then we will include Karnak temple today (in place of Abydos & Dendara tomorrow) and take the sleeper train from Luxor to Cairo tonight (approx. 9 hours). | OVERNIGHT: Luxor 4-star hotel. | MEALS: Breakfast. | EXTRAS: Hot air balloon in Luxor, Karnak Temple tour

We leave Luxor this morning and drive back to Cairo, stopping at the temples of Dendara and Abydos along the way. These temples are much less visited by tourists than the sites in Luxor, but are hugely impressive. Dedicated to the Goddess Hathor, Dendara in particular becomes many peopleโ€™s favourite site, and is incredibly well preserved. Nearby Abydos is another fascinating site, and was the cult center of the god of the dead, Osiris. The necropolis here was a pilgrimage and burial site and at least ten temples were originally built here. We arrive back into Cairo this evening and check into our hotel in the centre of the city for a final evening together. | OVERNIGHT: Cairo 3-star hotel. | MEALS: Breakfast
