      Characterized by vast valleys, countless rice terraces and the typical red mud houses of the Merina, you will drive through the picturesque landscape of the central highlands to your destination today. In Antsirabe, capital of semi-precious stones and former thermal town, the cityscape is now dominated by the many colorful rickshaws. Overnight stay at Hotel Arotel.       Today you will set course for Miandrivazo. Rice terraces as well as savannah landscape, typical houses and everyday life scenes of the ethnic groups Merina and Sakalava belong to the motives during todayโ€™s journey. It also gets noticeably warmer the further west you go. Overnight stay at Lakana Hotel. (Driving time approx. 5h, 225 km).

      In the morning you continue your way to Kirindy. In Kirindy there is a Swiss development project for the sustainable use and protection of the forests of Madagascar. In addition to several species of lemurs such as larval sifakas and forked-striped macaws, two mammal species are of particular interest: the ferret cat, better known as fossa, and the Madagascar or Giant Springrat. While fossas are widespread throughout the island, the giant springer rat exists only here in a very limited habitat. It is highly endangered. The day ends with a night hike on the edge of the forest.

      Before your departure to Bekopaka, a visit to Kirindy reserve is planned in the morning. Kirindy is best known for its fossas (Cryptoprocta ferox) and giant spring rats (Hypogeomys antimena). The latter have only a very limited habitat, located in the Sakalava land between the Tomitsy and Tsiribihina rivers. In addition to the fossas, Madagascarโ€™s smallest primates are also one of the main attractions in the reserve, and they are becoming increasingly rare on the island. They have found a refuge in the Kirindy Reserve. Afterwards you will go to Bekopaka, through savannah landscape and small typical Sakalava villages. Bekopaka is considered the entrance to the Tsingys.

      The Great Tsingys, about 17 km away, stand out above forests. The Tsingys are declared a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO. You walk inside canyons and underground caves, formed by the transgression and regression of the sea. Small staircases and suspension bridges are placed on the rocks to admire these impressive cathedrals. At the end of the climb, a magnificent viewpoint with a beautiful panorama over the great Tsingys awaits. Biologically, the Tsingys are no less interesting. Among others, the Deckens Crowned Sifaka (Propithecus deckenii) has its habitat here. Sleeping weasel macaws can be photographed well during the day in the tree hollows.

      Continue your journey to Morondava. Upon arrival, an unforgettable surprise awaits you. You will make a detour to the enamored baobabs and pass by the famous Baobab Avenue. Baobab avenue is one of the most beautiful and important sights of Red Island. The sunset at this place offers not only beautiful photo motives, but also an extraordinary color spectacle.       Today you will drive on mostly muddy tracks through the national road.35. After a one hour drive you will cross the river of Morondava as well as the channel of Dabara in Manamby. On the way there will also be small breaks to admire the scenery as well as to experience the daily life of the locals up close. After the picnic lunch, you will continue westward. At the end of the afternoon you will reach the village of Sambalahy, the western entrance to the Makay Massif. Depending on the time available, there may be an opportunity to visit the village.       The real adventure starts today. After the long journey, the Makay Mountains will be at your feet. You will start todayโ€™s day first with a small climb. After four hours of trekking, a breathtaking view of the whole massif awaits you. After lunch break, you will continue uphill-downhill along a wide valley.       After a well-deserved nightโ€™s rest, a leisurely breakfast awaits you. You will follow several small rivers until you reach Andakatomenavava, another large and rather isolated massif block in the west of the mountain range. On the hike you will have the opportunity to observe lemurs. You will walk through endemic palm forests that grow at the bottom of the valleys and canyons. Seen from the air, the valleys have the shape of a giant human brain. All afternoon you will hike across the Behetaheta plateau, passing a dense dry forest that grows on a large water reservoir under the plateau.       Early in the morning you will leave the camp and go to the heart of the massif through a three to four km long gorge, which is sometimes quite narrow and quite dark. The landscape is very varied. Then you will reach the famous Anosilahy Lake on whose shores you will have your lunch. The afternoon is dedicated to the ascent to the next plateau. From up here you will have a beautiful view over Lake Anosilahy and Lake Ambiamirefy. The valley of Anosilahy is home to thousands of bats that go in search of food, especially in the evening.       After breakfast, we will continue to another lake called Saririaky, whose name means "which resembles the sea". Lake Saririaky is probably one of the most worth seeing places in the Makay because of its beauty and the possibility of encountering lemurs, crocodiles and other wildlife. Afterwards, you will walk along the dry Sakamanitsy River past some villages down to the Makay River. At the end of the afternoon you will set up camp in Andranoteraky, which is located not far from the famous Mahatigny Cave. Overnight stay in tent. (Walking time about 6-7h, 200 mโ†‘โ†“).

      On the last day of the expedition, another highlight awaits you today: the Mahatigny Cave. After a three-hour walk you will reach the entrance to the cave, which consists of two large separate chambers with a water source in each of them. Most interesting are the petroglyphs, which probably date back to the recent history of the country. Overnight stay in tent. (Walking time about 6h).

      After a last trekking you will reach the village of Beronono, where the cars will be waiting for you. From here you will continue along the great Mangoky River to Beroroha. Here it is time to say goodbye and thank your porter team. After about 4h drive you will reach Beroroha. After visiting this large village, you will cross the river by motorboat. A last night under the stars on the other side of the river is waiting for you. Overnight stay in tent. (Walking time about 3-4h, 100 mโ†‘โ†“).

      After seven days in the wilderness you will return to civilization today. On partly bad roads you will drive through savannah-like landscape with smaller dry forests in southern direction to Ranohira, the gateway to the Isalo Mountains. In the evening you will check into your rooms and enjoy the comfort of a hotel with a first warm shower. Overnight at the Hotel Isalo Ranch.

      If time permits, take a short hike into the national park. Despite the dry climate, streams with crystal clear water splash in the deep gorges and provide small green oases. If you are lucky, you will see ring-tailed macaws - also called calicoes - here. The region is sacred for the Baras living here, as they bury their dead on the rocks. Afterwards drive to the west coast of Madagascar. On the way to Toliary the landscape is varied. The landscape resembles a typical African savannah. In the late afternoon you will reach the seaside resort of Ifaty. Overnight stay at the Bamboo Club. (Driving time approx. 5h, 275 km).
