Departing the city of Coca in the AM we start our day traveling by canoe down the Napo River. We should arrive at the reserve in the early afternoon where will hit the ground running on an educational hike to learn about medicinal plants, an important part of indigenous culture. Keep an eye out along the way as this area is filled with colorful macaws that glide gracefully though the tree cover. After our exploration in the forest, we will go back to the lodge for a delicious dinner before heading out on a late night excursion searching for caimans, small alligator like creatures common to the region.

Found throughout the Amazon’s branching system from Ecuador down into Bolivia, these dolphins are grey or pink in color and hide beneath the mineral rich waters of the zone. If luck is on your side, you will get to witness the breach of these majestic creatures. While kayaking we will also be on search for other water animals like otters, caimans and anacondas. Day 3: Kayaking To View Wildlife And Visit A Kichwa Family

Stop At: Orellana Province, Orellana Province
As morning breaks and light pokes through the dense forest canopy, we venture out look for other wildlife that gives the Amazon such life. Monkeys swinging from the trees that line the banks of the river as well as a variety of birds like, cormorants, king fishers, herons, among others, are common along the route. In the afternoon, we will visit a local indigenous Kichwa family, who will teach us about their way of living, culture and traditions. Here we will help them make chicha, a fermented beverage that is typical in the region and a staple in the lives of the indigenous people who reside here. This is also a prime opportunity to purchase handicrafts made bin the village, which proceeds go to support the local families. If we are fortunate enough to visit in the time when the Shaman is in town, we will also learn about local spiritual beliefs and healing-knowledge passed down through generations and a living reminder of the past.

Day 4: Clay Lick Trek

Stop At: Orellana Province, Orellana Province

Many animals that reside in the region sustain themselves through a diet of seeds and other small plants but supplement their diets with minerals from the clay. With some luck and patience, we may sight peccaries or even a family of colorful macaws! We will spend some time here in hopes of spotting one of the many animals that frequent the zone before returning to the village and then back to Coca for a farewell dinner.
